Guest Bio: Gary Ho, a 46-year-old father from Austin, experienced pain in his ankles and feet for over a decade before being diagnosed with chronic uncontrolled gout. He had his first attack in college, and his doctor told him it was a sprained ankle and prescribed pain pills. The pain continued for several years –getting worse and lasting longer as time went on (feeling like broken bones). In his 40s, Gary was finally diagnosed with chronic gout. He has since found relief from a medicine called KRYSTEXXA approved to treat adults with chronic gout that hasn’t been controlled with other treatments.  He seeks to educate others about the condition and the importance of speaking with a gout specialist to assess your options.

  • More than twenty eight percent of priority 1A ambulance jobs – the most life-threatening category – had a response time over ten minutes in January to March two thousand and seventeen, according to the latest Bureau of Health Information Quarterly report. More than one in three emergency category patients waited longer than fifteen minutes for an ambulance from the time a triple zero call was answered. A total of ninety four point seven per cent of ambulances responding to P1s arrived within half an hour, the report showed.
  • Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne has been given a one-month racing ban after pleading guilty to taking a banned appetite suppressant. Payne told the inquiry she knew Phentermine was banned on race days but thought it was permitted during trackwork. Once a sample provided by Payne shows the substance has left her system, she can resume trackwork.
  • Health professionals remain at the very top of the Australian public’s regard, according to the latest Roy Morgan Image of Professions Survey. The two thousand and seventeen poll revealed nurses, doctors, pharmacists and dentists all rank in the top six professions people trusted the most.

  • Two issues dominating recent health policy discussions have seen the Australian Medical Association at the forefront of political debate, expressing concerns over the direction of some processes and decisions. The medicinal cannabis and maternity services debates have kept AMA President Doctor Michael Gannon a familiar face around Parliament House in Canberra, explaining doctors’ views to Government and the media.
  • Be My Eyes has just over thirty five thousand 35,000 visually-impaired users registered for the app and over half a million volunteers. Whenever a visually impaired user requests assistance a sighted volunteer receives a notification and a video connection is established.
  • Cartoon characters on food packaging such as Kellogg’s Tony the Tiger and Toucan Sam are fuelling Australia’s childhood obesity crisis and should be restricted, public health experts say. Researchers at the Obesity Policy Coalition surveyed one hundred and eighty six packaged foods with cartoon characters designed to lure children, and found fifty two per cent were classified as unhealthy, based on Food Standards’ Nutrient Profiling Scoring Criterion.

He performs more than 500 joint replacement procedures a year and specializes in primary and revision knee replacement.

Lani is a small animal veterinarian and equestrian physical therapist who provides chiropractic, therapeutic laser and massage therapy for competitive race horses. A nature and animal enthusiast, Lani has had a lifelong passion for being active outdoors, camping, hiking and riding horses.
Lani’s knee problems started in 1996 when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee during a horse riding accident.
Despite the surgery, Lani’s pain progressed, and it became physically difficult for her to perform her job, which required her to be on her feet all day.
In 2013, Lani went ahead with a double knee replacement procedure and is back to working, riding and living an active, pain-free life.
