• The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RDFS) will give indigenous Australians from South Australia free B-strain vaccine against the deadly meningococcal disease.

• Researchers from Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre have developed the liquid biopsy, a blood test that looks at minor fragments of DNA emitted from cancer cells into the bloodstream, called circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA).

• Queensland researchers were able to create a beating human heart muscle by using stem cells. This technology will allow researchers to now perform experiments on human heart tissue, screen new drugs, and investigate heart repair.

Guest Bio: Shayne Higson is a spokesperson and stakeholder liaison for Go Gentle Australia, a not-for-profit organisation established by Andrew Denton in mid 2016. She is also a current director of Dying With Dignity (NSW). Before becoming involved in the campaign for voluntary euthanasia law reform, Shayne was a photographic artist and someone who usually expressed her political opinions through her visual art. Although she has always believed in the principle of dying with dignity, it was following the death of her mother in late 2012 from an aggressive brain cancer that Shayne became passionate and vocal about the need for law reform. Just prior to joining the team at Go Gentle Australia, Shayne ran as the lead NSW Senate candidate for the Voluntary Euthanasia Party (VEP) in the 2016 Federal Election. This was her third election campaign and she was also the driving force behind the registration of the first state branch of the Voluntary Euthanasia Party in early 2014 and its State Convenor until July 2016. Shayne is dedicated to providing a voice for the thousands of families and carers who have watched loved ones suffer unnecessarily at the end of their terminal illness.

• A device which sends tiny electric shocks to the brain to stimulate neurons could one day be at least as useful to people with anxiety and depression as antidepressants, Curtin University researchers hope.

• CEOs of Health insurance were warned they could be summoned to appear before a Senate inquiry regarding the 5% rise in health insurance premium prices, which is 3 times the rate of inflation.

• David Bowen, CEO of the troubled National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), has announced his retirement. He has led the NDIS during its problem-plagued transition to full scheme since July last year.

• Two doctors who were previously diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) claim that the Jelinek Program cleared them of the symptoms of the disease. The Jelinek program consists of a strict regimen of exercise, meditation, low-fat diet and sun exposure to combat the condition.

• The International League Against Epilepsy classification system  has been given an overhaul, to allow patients and doctors to be better informed on the causes and risks of the disease, and its associations with other conditions.

• House Bill 4260 was submitted by Jessica Farrar, a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives, and states that masturbation “will be considered an act against an unborn child” which would attract a $100 fine.
