• Fertility specialists have knocked back calls for more regulation of the IVF industry, saying Australia is an international leader in infertility research and treatment governed by a code of practice that is the envy of the world.

• Australia’s largest not-for- profit provider of health and aged care services, St Vincent’s Health Australia, proposed the measures to adopt higher alcohol taxes, ban alcohol sponsorship in sport, and introduce nation-wide lockout laws to reduce the harm caused by excessive drinking, as part of a plan to reduce alcohol-related harm by 20 percent by 2025.

• Next week’s ACT budget will allocate $7.3 million dollars over four years to establish a clinical genomic service that will allow medical researchers at the Australian National University to take their specialised skills into Canberra’s hospitals.

Emma is focused on taking a collaborative approach to share evidence-based nutritional science with health professionals to help them deliver simple nutrition information to their patients to improve population nutrition.
According to research Australians consume too much discretionary food and not enough foods from the five food groups for a healthy diet. Foods That Do Good was established to help address this issue by providing health professionals with easy-to-access, holistic and evidence-based nutrition information that will help Australians understand how to work towards better health through a balanced diet.

Overview:
• Glen Cloke was supposed to die at 14. Almost 40 years later, Mr Cloke is one of the Peter MacCallum Centre's longest surviving patients since getting his diagnosis. He and 29 other cancer survivors toured the centre's new $1 billion purpose-built facility, which is located inside the new Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre building.

• Health authorities in the Northern Territory have issued an alert for the potentially fatal mosquito-borne virus Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE). MVE has been detected in chickens on the outskirts of Darwin, and residents have been urged to take precautions.

• The ACT Government will allocate $29 million to boost staff numbers at the Canberra Hospital’s emergency department to address waiting times and meet the demand of extra beds. The June 7 ACT budget will provide for an additional 39 staff to be hired in the next financial year, including four new doctors and 24 nurses.

• The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) announced the ban on advertising contraceptives on radio and television on Thursday and said it was acting in response to complaints from parents.

• The joint-project between St Vincent’s Hospital’s Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery and Melbourne University is looking at the way the arm and brain signals communicate. They have been able to send brain signals to the robotic arm, but now are looking at how to return those signals to give the sensation of touch.

• One hundred and fifty international doctors, scientists and researchers wrote an open letter to the World Health Organisation (WHO) calling for the games in Rio de Janeiro in August to be moved or delayed due to the virus, which is linked to serious birth defects. But the United Nations health agency rejected the call, saying that having the Games in Rio asplanned would significantly alter the spread of Zika.
