Guest Bio: Mary-Rose Mitchell has been with Enable for nearly four years, and through this time have worked in different roles and in this current role for a year and a half. Enable is a not for profit, NGO in which they once primarily supported clients who received Disability Services Commission Funding. However over the years, they have branched into new areas to broaden our horizons which includes Mental Health, DCPFS, Health Department, Insurance Injury Compensation or even through the Education Department. They have had much growth in the past couple of years going from the one office and 88 clients to now 5 offices throughout the Southwest, and 336 clients in which we provide services. With this growth comes new directions, and recently they have employed a Registered Nurse whose primary role is to create and oversee implementation of holistic health care plans.

They are able to support clients who have very complex medical needs, and have been inpatients for long periods. Some of these services include tracheostomy care, Oxygen administration, suctioning requirements, PEG feeding and in some instances palliative care in the home. Overview:
• A large outbreak of mumps in Western Australia has been blamed for a big increase in the number of cases Australia-wide, and has led to criticism of the state’s vaccination rates. More than 390 cases of mumps have been reported around WA since March, compared to about 20 cases at the same time last year.

•  Environmental groups are warning that Australia’s new clean air standards are not good enough because they do not comply with World Health Organisation recommendations.

• The far west’s Aboriginal health service says it’s preparing to roll out a major research project to Wilcannia and Menindee aimed at gauging local levels of psychological distress.

• The board of the Far West Local Health District will put itself under the spotlight early next year, conducting an audit of its governance. The LHD has been dogged by workplace bullying allegations this year, launching two internal reviews, saying neither substantiated the claims against senior staff by hospital workers.

• US dating app Tinder is teaming up with Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) to raise awareness among the young about organ donation. Romance-seekers swiping on some profiles will be prompted to sign up to the NHS organ donor register.

• The trial has shown that the drug anastrozole is as effective as tamoxifen for treating postmenopausal women with an early form of breast cancer, known as ductal carcinoma. The study was co-ordinated by the Australia and New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group, and the results have been presented to the 2015 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

• A study from Murdoch University, Neville Ellis interviewed 22 farmers from the Wheatbelt town in WA found that farmers’ mental health is being negatively impacted as weather patterns become more erratic and unpredictable.

• An inquiry into services for people with autism spectrum disorder is calling for submissions from the public, and Bendigo autism advocate Rebecca Kelly has outlined her concerns. Ms Kelly’s eight-year-old daughter was diagnosed with autism four years ago and her son, who is now six, was diagnosed a year later.

• The Garvan Institute of Medical Research warmly congratulates Professor Don Chisholm, who has been awarded a Doctor of Science (DSc) by UNSW Australia. This higher doctorate is accorded in recognition of a body of work that has made a significant contribution to a field of knowledge.

• A Queensland first surgery has given a child her Christmas wish.New technology has helped Brisbane doctors remove the cause of four-year-old Rowena Alexander’s severe epilepsy, allowing her to head home to her family in Charters Towers in northern Queensland.

• Thousands more children will be able to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) after the Federal and South Australian governments ended a funding dispute and pledged to provide $50 million each to a transition period.

•  International team led by University of Exeter Medical School, King’s College London and Cardiff University, including Dr Ruth Pidsley of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, showed for the first time that genetic differences between people can affect DNA methylation in the brain as it develops.
