According to a recent U.S. study, inappropriate patient sexual behavior remains a common experience for physical therapists during their careers. More than eighty percent of nearly nine hundred physical therapists surveyed said they have encountered sexual remarks, touches, indecent exposure and sexual assault. Almost half said they’ve experienced one of these situations in the past year – numbers that haven’t changed since the last major surveys in the nineteen nineties. U.S. health care professionals have sixteen times greater risk for non-fatal violence at work than other fields, the study authors write in the journal Physical Therapy.
The most recent studies that focused specifically on patient sexual harassment and physical therapists were done in the United States, Canada and Australia in the late nineteen nineties, the study team notes. At that time, nearly eighty percent of therapists said they had experienced sexual harassment, and one quarter of those reported psychological consequences such as anger, guilt, fear, anxiety and depression.
Researchers found that eighty four percent of survey participants had experienced inappropriate patient sexual behavior during their career, and forty seven percent experienced it during the last year. Women reported significantly higher rates of harassment, especially staring, suggestive remarks, inappropriate touches, date requests, sexual gestures, requests for sexual activity and masturbation. Several factors increased the risk of experiencing inappropriate behavior, such as routinely working with patients with brain impairments and having fewer than five years of direct patient experience. Harassment was most common between a female therapist and male patient. Treating mostly male patients increased the odds of harassment by almost four hundred percent, and treating an equal mix of patients doubled the odds, as compared to those who mainly treated female patients.
The average dad in the US is getting older. The typical dad now is nearly thirty one years old at his child’s birth. A new study finds that the average age of fathers in the U.S. is rising as men take a few extra years to practice their dad jokes before having kids. That’s more than three years older than the average dad was in the nineteen seventies. The average age of first-time moms has also been rising, thanks in large part to a dramatic drop in teen pregnancies.
The dad research, published Wednesday in the journal Human Reproduction, looked at live birth data from nineteen seventy two to two thousand fifteen in the U.S. New dads are older than they’ve been in decades. In two thousand fiffteen, the average age of a dad at the time of his baby’s birth in the U.S. was thirty point nine years old, up from twenty seven point four years old in nineteen seventy two. That might seem like a small shift, but it’s likely to make a dent on demographics over time, since waiting longer to have kids is associated with having fewer children. The average age varied depending on dad’s demographics. Men who had college degrees were older when their babies were born than men with only a high school education.
Dads in the Northeast are oldest. And Japanese and Vietnamese-American fathers — who were thirty six on average at the time of their baby’s birth — were older than any other racial or ethnic group. Black fathers were the youngest, at an average age of thirty point four. The gap in age between moms and dads is narrowing. In two thousand fifteen, dads were an average of two point three years older than the mothers of their kids, compared to two point seven years in nineteen seventy two. The researchers suspect that’s due, in part, to more women entering the workforce and holding off on having kids early in their careers.
According to a new study from Northwestern Medicine, many practices advertising plastic surgery on social media are not board-certified plastic surgeons, the Chicago Tribune reports. The study is out Wednesday in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. The study uncovered that some of the top posts on Instagram came from dentists, spas and even a hair salon.
Doctor Clark Schierle, a senior author of the study and plastic surgeon at Northwestern Medicine, told The Tribune that, “Sometimes, if things seem too good to be true, they just might be.” More specifically, the study analyzed twenty one hashtags where one would find links to various procedures. This includes: #plasticsurgery, #facelift, #breastimplant, #boobjob, #liposuction and #brazilianbuttlift, according to the same outlet. The results turned up one point eight million posts — which were pared down to nine from each hashtag.
The most posts came from foreign surgeons. Next in line — at twenty six percent — were dermatologists, gynecologists and general surgeons, who mind you, are not certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or its Canadian counterpart. Here’s the catch: a licensed medical doctor can legally perform cosmetic surgeries. Depending on the doctor, though, expertise could be different. Those certified by the board trailed behind at seventeen point eight percent.
On the flip side of the coin, some say it’s not such a bad thing, as other professionals, not certified by the board, get extensive training elsewhere. Those certified through the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery participate in a one-year fellowship training program and complete a residency in a specific area. This could even mean some cosmetic surgeons have tallied up more experience than plastic surgeons. To distinguish the difference, cosmetic surgery is often done to enhance features while plastic surgery requires patients to go under the knife to fix various issues. The medical profession warns would-be patients to do their research before agreeing to a procedure.
