Health Professional Radio – Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine Working Together

Neal Howard: Hello and welcome to Health Professional Radio. I’m your host Neal Howard., thank you so much for joining us. A lot of people today are struggling with chronic illnesses, more than 47 million people, almost 50 million people suffer from conditions that are related to metabolic syndrome. Our guest in studio today is Master Nan Lu, Practitioner and Teacher of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He’s got a new book, Digesting the Universe: A Revolutionary Framework for Healthy Metabolism Function and he’s here with us in studio to talk about how western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine can work hand in hand for optimal metabolic function. Good afternoon and welcome to the program Master Lu.

Master Nan Lu: Hi, good afternoon.

N: As I said there are a lot of us who are suffering from chronic illnesses and maybe we’ve been to our doctor and not finding much relief and we’ve come to the point where we like to try something new. You are New York State licensed Acupuncturist but so much more than that, you are a Grand Master. Talk about your background and your Grand Master Lu, what exactly is your specialty?

L: Well my specialty in the Chinese medicine also my specialty in how to use energy to heal the conditions and then most important I can help the patient discover their own healing powers. So instead of focusing only on the illness and the disease they can focus on how to create harmony.

N: Now are you able to train people to be a grand master such as yourself or simply giving us techniques in order to use our own energy in order to help ourselves?

L: Well there are many different levels. I usually run a lot of courses for the professionals how to teach the professionals who can see things differently particularly how to apply this called the body-mind healing. So then we see the body, mind and the spirit that this is a whole package then we would be able to see condition differently. So therefore the professionals know how to deal with the conditions in different angles.

N: Digesting the Universe: A Revolutionary Framework for Healthy Metabolism Function explains how western medicine can work hand in hand with TCM.

L: Well that the western medicine is a from that different angles, so think about that today we called the modern science. Modern science has … called the relativity theory which is the space and the time. When you have and different space and the different the time then you see things differently. Western medicine is a state of different space and different time when they look at the disease and the illness differently. Chinese medicine we use space state of different space and the different time then they will look at the condition differently. So it can be the same with condition for example like acid reflux. Acid reflux is a condition so the western medicine we would take some of the condition, some medicines then you continue treat the condition then why and the patient suddenly had during the divorce or during the stress and the condition change because everything can be under control. So here we say emotions are involved in the conditions. So in the Chinese medicine we look at these conditions is called not just a…function disorder, is liver and the stomach relationship of function disorder. So by dealing with these conditions so we have to make a liver function better and the stomach function better. These are two organs relationship that change and then the condition can be changed. So this way and the practitioners that we understand “Oh so that’s the way I can use the western medicine to treat the conditions” then I use other ways it can be meditation, can be Qigong practice, it can be acupuncture or herb to treat the root cause of problems. Once the root cause of the problem changed then I can be little slow and then cut off the medicine. So this way, condition can be real treated instead of just deal the symptoms. For the other example so like in a breast cancer after chemotherapy, after radiation, after everything done and the patient have to take tamoxifen for the three years now have to five years but conditions, side effects to stroke no one can go through this but patient cannot stop this. If they stop the medication, the emotional cannot handle that because they’re afraid and then later cancer may come back. So how do we deal with these things? So I teach the patients because the medication is causing your function disorder so if you take herb, if you do the acupuncture or if you practice medication, your body can be stronger, may be you can continue taking tamoxifen for five years without to suffer, without the side effect then they didn’t have to stop. So this way we can do the side by side deal with the condition instead of stopping the medication.

N: We’re talking about integrating both western medicine with traditional Chinese medicine. Both of which talk about the benefits of rest, giving your body a break, 8 hours of sleep, that sort of thing and just taking some time to relax. Talk about how TCM, the benefits of TCM, taking a break using those principles differ from the principle of just simple rest in the western medicine tradition.

L: Okay, so here the western way of thinking things is to look at the illness, the disease, that which is true. I am not saying they are not true in that angle but however the body is unique, you never can divide the body as individual or single cells, everything is connect. So today’s science that’s what we say, the quantum theory where they say everything that we will penetrate deep until sub-atomic level, everything is energy, all the energy is connect. So that is the one of the unique, the energetic level which is at the basic science level, everything s connect. So we have to deal these conditions, we have to deal these illness by everything is connect. So you have to rest, you have to meditate yourself, you have to look at the food, even you have to look at your life differently without to change your life your condition just change, condition just become like a symptom, one symptom equals…other symptoms unless we change our lives, unless we change the root cause of the problem, unless you change your belief. So you have to believe, you have to understand, we create our own reality today, so if a reality can be created from your mind, from your belief then we can create a good and we create a harmony, can we create a balance.

N: Absolutely. And where can our listeners get a copy of your latest work, Digesting the Universe: A Revolutionary Framework for Healthy Metabolism Function?
