Overview:

• Researchers at the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) have been investigating what effect Cannabidiol has on the mental illness. Using a rodent model of schizophrenia, the research team found cannabidiol was able to restore recognition, working memory and social behaviour. University of Wollongong PhD candidate Ashleigh Osborne said the findings suggested Cannabidiol could be used as a pharmaceutical drug.

• Renewed concerns about Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) have emerged following the release of a survey of doctors, which gave the facility the lowest rating of any of Perth’s major public hospitals. According to the AMA survey, only 8 per cent of junior doctors believed there was good morale at PMH, and more than half said they were burnt out.

• The Federal Government wants to drug test 5,000 new Centrelink clients and those who test positive will be forced onto an income-management scheme, which controls how a recipient spends their money. The Department of Social Services confirmed recipients who fail a test more than once will pay for the cost of subsequent tests.

Overview:

• SA Pathology says it will axe almost 200 jobs without hampering efficiency, but unions have vowed to respond with industrial action. SA Pathology spokesman Glenn Edwards said the cuts were about creating a contemporary service. He also said that a modern pathology service uses a number of very important enablers so IT systems, very sophisticated world-leading automation systems in laboratories and this is the way pathology is trending.

• Seven recommendations were made at the inquest into the suicide of Ahlia Jane Raftery, 18, who took her own life in the Mater Mental Health Centre, Newcastle, in March 2015. Counsel assisting the inquest, Peggy Dwyer recommended that NSW Minister for Health Brad Hazzard introduce one-to-one nurse to patient ratios in all New South Wales psychiatric intensive care units.

• The Valium recall noticed was issued by the TGA on Friday because the relaxant had been swapped out for different drugs at a Sydney distribution centre. Roche said the incident occurred at a distribution centre, Symbion Contract Logistics released a statement saying they had sacked a worker at its Sydney-based distribution facility.

• In an interview with GQ magazine, Prince William opened up about his struggle over his mother Princess Diana’s death. For the past year Prince William and Catherine have been speaking up about mental health issues. In a video the pair made for Heads Together, along with Prince Harry, all three speak about why it was important to them and how speaking about such issues could work like “medicine”.

• The 2008 death of Graham Rollbusch, 70, at the Makk and McLeay nursing home is under investigation by coroner Mark Johns. Registered nurse Danilo Valdez Laurente worked on the night of Mr Rollbusch’s death, and told the coroner it was usual practice to have three staff on a night shift. When questioned by Mr Johns about how Mr Palmer was monitored while all three staff members conducted rounds, Mr Laurente conceded they could not watch him continuously.

• The suicide rate for men aged 85 and older was 39.3 per 100,000 people. In women of the same age, it was 5.7. Monash University Professor Paul Komesaroff said a lack of support was partly to blame for poor mental health in many older Australians.

Her recovery and rehab has been a slow process but she’s making great progress and Bianca is so proud of how far she has come. Bianca has teamed up with Priceline Pharmacy because she wants to help highlight the need for regular blood pressure checks to fight against stroke.
