• Medicinal cannabis advocate Jenny Hallam is facing drug charges for producing cannabis oil for terminally ill people has faced court, with dozens of supporters turning up at the hearing. It is legal in South Australia for doctors to prescribe cannabis under particular circumstances, but advocates such as Greens Upper House MLC Tammy Franks argue that getting suitable products is a problem.

 The death cap mushroom (Amanita phalloides), and the yellow-staining mushroom (Agaricus xanthodermus) are spawning in huge numbers in the parks, gardens, and laneways of urban Melbourne, to the hills and fields of rural and regional Victoria.

• Northern New South Wales Public Health Unit acting director Greg Bell said there had been 37 reported cases of whooping cough in the past week, which was double that of the previous week. “It is a spike that adds concern to us for protecting our little ones, unvaccinated and little ones that haven’t started vaccinations,” Mr Bell said.

Guest Bio: Prof Falasca graduated in Pharmacy and then in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Camerino, Italy. His education further includes a “Diploma of Specialization” in Applied Pharmacology at the University of Bari and a FORMEZ Research Award (PhD equivalent) at the Consorzio Mario Negri Sud, Italy. After three years at the New York University Medical Center, Department of Pharmacology (Head Prof Joseph Schlessinger), Prof Falasca took up a position as Head of the Unit of Physiopathology of Cell Signalling within the Consorzio Mario Negri Sud in 1998. In 2001 he moved to London where he was appointed as Principal Research Fellow, Senior Lecturer within the Department of Medicine at the University College London. In 2007 he was appointed as Professor of Molecular Pharmacology at the Queen Mary University of London. He is currently Professor of Metabolism at Curtin University, Australia. He has published more than 100 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an editorial board member for several international journals.

Overview:

• The Government has now released its own report, conducted by the Department of Health and the Department of Treasury. The Jacobs report said because the hospital was still recording lead levels, and the “dead leg” water pipe was removed in September, it is “unlikely to explain the persistence of the lead problem”. The Jacobs report found that leaching from brass fittings within Perth Children’s Hospital “potentially exacerbated by dezincification” was the source of elevated lead levels still encountered at the facility.

The 2017 AMA National Conference at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, from 26-28 May, will feature an impressive line-up of influential political and health leaders, speakers and panellists, led by Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull. The Conference will feature a high-level panel discussion of the Big Health Issues of 2017, moderated by Paul Bongiorno AM; induction of new AMA Fellows; the Leadership Development Dinner; Indigenous Medical Scholarship; Gala Dinner; and delegate Soapbox.

• Meat and Livestock Australia claimed 3D-food printers will soon be as common in our restaurants as coffee machines and microwaves. MLA Tomorrow’s Food manager Michael Lee said if the red meat industry didn’t embrace the new 3D-food technology, it could instead pose a threat to Australia’s 50,000 beef cattle and lamb producers rather than an opportunity.

• Shammi Pal was 61 when she gave birth to her daughter Angel, who is now seven months old. Ms Pal and her husband Lucas Arora didn’t meet until they were in their late 40s. An ad in an Indian newspaper led Ms Pal to a clinic in western India run by fertility specialist Dr Mehul Damani. She conceived with a donor egg and sperm and returned to Australia to prepare for the birth of her baby.

 Under changes to be unveiled in next week’s budget, the Australian Government intends to change the prescribing software used by doctors, with the default setting switched to prescribe generic drugs.

• Professor Brian Draper, lead researcher from UNSW, said their study identified a gap in the medical guideline about health professionals sharing information with relatives. Professor Draper said their findings found that families in particular, as well as health professionals, were often aware of changes in the behaviour of an at-risk family member.
