• With at least 60 new amputees registered in Syria and Afghanistan each week, medical professionals are struggling to keep up with the demand for prosthetics. A program called the Human Study is trying to help by using the internet to reach students in some of the most dangerous places on earth.

• Ivanhoe Grammar School has partnered with e-NABLE, a community of online 3D designers, so students can learn how to make and produce prosthetics. Steve Brophy, the school’s director of information and communication technology and eLearning, said his students were now thinking like designers and considering the needs of others.

• Currently, Australians above a certain income threshold incur what is known as the Medicare levy surcharge. But Francesco Paolucci, the head of health policy at Murdoch University’s Sir Walter Murdoch School of Public Policy and International Affairs, has developed an alternative model. Professor Paolucci says his proposal builds on the strength of the current system but would let individuals decide the insurer and purchaser of their health services.

• Red blooms will blossom all year round at Canberra’s National Arboretum in a garden dedicated to those who have died of AIDS. The AIDS Garden of Reflection was declared open with a song from Canberra’s Gay and Lesbian Choir, Qwire.

• Department of Education and Child Development special educator Kathy Kleinschmidt said autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was just that; a spectrum, and many ASD children were highly functioning — if just a little bit quirky. Ms Kleinschmidt said high-functioning ASD children should be able to attend mainstream schools, but there needed to be education and tools available to staff.

• Launching the AMA Private Health Insurance Report Card 2017, AMA President, Dr Michael Gannon, said that people should thoroughly research and compare the various and varied policies on offer to ensure they are getting value for money and, more importantly, that they know exactly what they are covered for in the event of accident, illness, or injury.

• Since the HPV vaccine was rolled out as a schools-based program for girls in 2007, there has been a steady improvement in the number of 15-year-olds protected against the virus.Michael Frost, the head of the health performance and accountability framework group at the AIHW, said nationally the figures had improved since 2012-13.

• Rohan O’Reilly is a movement therapist in Newcastle, New South Wales, who has been using alternative therapies involving virtual reality devices to help his clients with rehabilitation. Mr O’Reilly said virtual reality helped clients to exercise their bodies in non-traditional ways.

• The Council of Australian Governments Health Council last week announced it would develop the first national suicide prevention plan. Mental Health Australia CEO Frank Quinlan said the announcement was welcomed by the sector, but emphasised clear targets and performance indicators were necessary. Jack Heath, CEO of mental illness advocacy group SANE, agreed long-term goals were essential.
