Overview:
• Urgent action is needed to ensure there is adequate support for people who have a mental illness and are not eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Connie Digolis from the Mental Health Council of Tasmania said work was currently underway to find out exactly how many people would not be covered by the NDIS.

• A new research shows that we may have been underestimating goosebumps. Professor Rod Sinclair, a dermatologist at the University of Melbourne, explained that the “goosebump muscle” could hold the key for skin cancer, baldness and burns treatment.

• Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley has agreed to partly pay back the cost of four trips to the Gold Coast where she and her partner own two properties. The ABC has analysed three years’ worth of the minister’s travel reports and found she travelled to the Gold Coast 20 times.

• A property where cannabis oil is produced in South Australia was raided by the police yesterday, causing outrage and fears for the lives of sick Queensland children who rely on medical cannabis. The police seized chemicals and other substances for forensic testing, but no charges have yet been laid.

• The Royal Australasian College of Physicians has cut Launceston General Hospital’s adult internal medicine training accreditation from level three to level two, which means young doctors training in disciplines such as cardiology, gastroenterology and respiratory diseases cannot finish their basic training at the Launceston General Hospital.

• Under Queensland law, motorists can be fined for not giving way to emergency vehicles when safe to do so. Moving into the path of emergency vehicles flashing blue or red lights or sounding the siren can cost three demerit points and a fine of $284.

Overview:
• Despite the ‘No jab, No play’ policy implemented last year, Victoria’s immunisation rate in children still remains a problem. Currently about 7% of children under the age of six are not vaccinated, leaving holes in the state’s so-called Herd Immunity.

• France recently joined the Opt-Out Policy, along with Spain, Austria, Belgium, and Singapore. However, Australia is unlikely to join the  Opt-Out Policy. This policy that presumes an individual to be organ donors unless they officially register to opt out.

• The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is calling for a real-time national register for firearms so authorities can have a central point to access information, which it says will help reduce gun violence.

Overview:
• The State Government outlines a $775,000 campaign with four phases aiming to gain “public confidence” and make the public “more enthusiastic” about the new Royal Adelaide Hospital. This campaign is meant to run between April 2016 and February 2017, but phases had been delayed because of the project’s budget issues.

• There has been a dramatic increase in the number of women choosing midwives to manage the birth of their babies in Queensland. Doctors have raised concerns that obstetricians were being sidelined, arguing patient care could be put at risk.

• Cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhea and syphilis in Western Australia have more than tripled in the past five years. Doctors are now seeking ways to reinforce the safe-sex methods.
