• Palliative care doctors are warning the Victorian Government not to legalize euthanasia. Professor Peter Hudson from St Vincent’s Health said the new system would provide better quality care for assisted suicide than for people who request palliative care.

• The Productivity Commission said in a report that public hospital patients overseas had more user choice over their care, which leads to improved service quality and efficiency as patients can plan services in advance and access useful information.

• Water pipes in the Perth Children’s Hospital will again be flushed this time with iced water in an urgent attempt to rid them of the lead contamination which tests indicated the contamination was confined to the new hospital building.

• The Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) trial is the largest clinical trial conducted in Australia, which determines whether daily low dose of  aspirin prevents or delays onset of age-related illness and if the benefits will outweigh the risks.

• Police in Newcastle have raided an inner-city unit where medicinal cannabis was being grown, seizing hundreds of plants. The Ubuntu Wellness Clinic claims to be one of the country’s largest suppliers of medicinal cannabis products, with almost 2,000 customers.

• A study conducted at Melbourne’s Royal Women’s Hospital tracked mothers and babies who received nine-monthly visits from a psychologist and a physiotherapist in the first year of the children’s lives and compared them to a control group who did not receive that help. It found 27 per cent of the mothers who were not given the intervention had symptoms of depression and 42 per cent had symptoms of anxiety.

• Persistent lead contamination in the water supply at the new $1.2-billion Perth Children’s Hospital is continuing to frustrate efforts to complete the building. Testing is continuing on site, and CCTV cameras have been inserted in the pipes to try to trace the source of the lead, so far without success.

The group operates the war veterans’ homes in Myrtle Bank and Angle Park, as well as retirement villages at Myrtle Bank, Marion and Glengowrie.

• Patients at the Princess Alexandra Hospital will start undergoing treatment within days now that the new computer program, Calypso, has gone online. Radiation oncologist Tanya Holt explained that unlike conventional radiation beam therapies, the Calypso beacon tracked tumours in real time and only allowed radiation to go through when the prostate was in range.
