Susie currently contributes regularly to smh.com.au, Australian Women’s Fitness, CLEO and Woman’s Day magazines and she is the consultant dietitian at Sydney University Sport, Body Science International, Go Natural Foods, Peppercorn Food Company and SIMPLE skincare.

•  Andrew Katelaris, A deregistered Sydney doctor has defended injecting patients with cannabis oil, despite breaching a code of conduct for non-registered health professionals. The commission concluded Dr Katelaris put his own interest in self-protection and self-promotion ahead of the health and safety of two vulnerable women suffering from ovarian cancer.

• Evidence of a highly drug-resistant salmonella superbug that could infect humans and livestock has been discovered in Australia for the first time which was found in an infected cat. It is resistant to carbapenems, a drug used as a life-saving defence in Australian hospitals.

•  The CSIRO is partnering with US research company Verily and James Cook University to target the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries the potentially deadly diseases. They intend to infect the male mozzies with a bacteria known as wolbachia, which renders the males sterile.

Overview:
•  A coronial inquest is being held into the death of former Socceroo Stephen Herczeg, 72, who died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on September 19. Earlier this week, the inquest heard Mr Herczeg died after the pressure of the oxygen caused his bladder to burst and his lungs to collapse.

• Dr Brian Crickitt is standing trial for the murder of his wife Christine over New Years Eve 2009, and is accused of deliberately injecting her with a fatal dose of insulin at their Woodbine home, in Sydney’s south-west.

•  The sale of apricot kernels as food was banned in December by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), killing the $600,000 a year industry. Since the ban, inspectors from the New South Wales Food Safety Authority have been keeping an eye out for illegal sales.

Guest Bio: Jane Wiggers de Vries is a 25-year-old nurse at St Vincent’s Private Hospital. She was diagnosed with fast growing triple negative breast cancer at age 24, an extremely rare diagnosis for someone so young. Jane has the BRCA1 gene, which dramatically increase her chances of both breast and ovarian cancer. Since her diagnosis, Jane has undergone chemotherapy, radiation and a double mastectomy.

DreamLab App: Using your Smartphone to Help in Cancer Research [Interview][Transcript]

Guest Bio: Samantha Oakes received her PhD in Medical Science from the Garvan/St Vincent’s Clinical School, University of New South Wales in 2007, with funding from a NHMRC Dora Lush scholarship. The focus of her PhD was on understanding the role of prolactin receptor and its downstream targets during mammary gland development and cancer. She received the Garvan Institute of Medical Research thesis prize for this work. In 2012, Samantha returned to Garvan to continue her work into understanding the cues that regulate cell survival in the mammary gland and in breast cancer. In 2013, Samantha received a National Breast Cancer Foundation Early Career Fellowship and has been appointed as Group Leader. Samantha now leads a small team focused on Cell Survival in the larger Cancer Biology laboratory headed by Professor Christopher Ormandy.
