Overview:
• The team from Garvan Institute’s Genomics and Epigenetics Division, looked in detail at how the genome’s structural organisation differs between cancerous and normal cells – and how this, in turn, influences epigenetic-related changes in gene expression that can drive cancer. Their study has just been published in the leading journal Genome Research.

• Queensland Health says there is no link between two possible Zika cases in the Whitsundays and a confirmed case in Mackay,in the state’s north. Two women, from Bowen and Cannonvale, had been travelling in Bali with another person, from Gordonvale in the far north, who is confirmed to have the virus.

• Research published in the Medical Journal of Australia today found at least eight deaths occurred because of incorrect dosages of the medication, methotrexate – a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease. Researcher Rose Cairns, from the New South Wales Poisons Information Centre, said problems arose because unlike many medications that are taken at least once a day, methotrexate should only be taken once a week.

• Disability advocates believe that in the past, little sex education had been aimed at people with a disability. People with disabilities can now get support with organisations such as CARA, which has adopted an open approach to sexuality with its client base.

• A dedicated paediatric palliative care nurse will soon begin working with children and their families in Canberra.The ACT Government has announced $2.1 million in funding over the next four years to expand palliative care services.

• Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles said Poor design, rather than a lack of government funding, is to blame for a mobile dialysis truck sitting idle in an Alice Springs community health centre car park for two years.  NT Health Minister John Elferink said he did not know when the dialysis truck was last used, but believed it did provide dialysis at special sporting events and festivals.

• Laws that came into effect three years ago entitled career firefighters and some volunteers to access compensation for 12 cancers proven to be caused by exposure to carcinogens and toxins that firefighters come into contact with at a higher rate. Since then, one claim has been successful, two rejected and one is still pending.

•  St John Ambulance has taken over Apollo Health, with plans to turn its medical centres into urgent care facilities to reduce pressure on WA’s emergency departments. Chief executive Tony Ahern believed the move would help reduce pressure on emergency departments but said it was not the only solution to ambulance ramping.

• Brain scans can reveal whether someone suffers from depression and show what kind of depression they have, according to the findings, published in Psychological Medicine, that showed medical imaging techniques, commonly known as MRIs, show distinct differences in the brains of people suffering different types of depression.

Overview:
• A $1 million mental health training program has begun to address the high suicide rate among Victorian paramedics. Data has shown the high toll of the job for ambulance workers, whose rate of suicide is four times higher than the general public.

• A recent study by the CSIRO and Adelaide University revealed one in six consumers were avoiding dairy for comfort rather than medically diagnosed reasons. Avoiding bloating and flatulence are why many Australians choose to not consume dairy products.

• Three SA Health staff have been sacked after inappropriately accessing patient records. SA Health provided an update on privacy breaches and said it was committed to report quarterly on how many staff have been disciplined for inappropriately accessed record in the previous three months.
