A Cellular Program With Great Promise For Improving Cancer Therapy.

Dana Westphal
Presenter: Katherine Lodge
Guest: Dana Westphal
Guest Bio: Dr. Dana Westphal is working on a cellular program, called apoptosis, which is used by all multicellular organisms to eliminate unwanted and potentially dangerous cells. Her research is based on understanding the molecular details of how this program is regulated by members of the Bcl-2 family of proteins. Of particular interest to her are the family members Bak and Bax, which convert from benign single molecules into lethal complexes to induce cell death.

This cell death program is often switched off in cancer cells. Thus, targeting Bak and Bax to specifically eliminate cancer cells shows great promise for improving cancer therapy.
