Updated Geriatric Oncology Guidelines

Dr. William Dale, director of the Center for Cancer and Aging and vice chair for academic affairs in the Department of Supportive Care Medicine at City of Hope, a cancer research and treatment organization, discusses the updated cancer and aging guideline released by the American Society of Clinical Oncology. A geriatric assessment is defined as an evaluation of an older adult’s physical and cognitive abilities, emotional health, co-existing medical conditions, medications, nutrition, and social circumstances. This assessment is suggested to help clinicians modify cancer treatment and improve patient’s quality of life. The update includes a new tool so that the largest demographic of cancer patients has an increased chance of receiving precision medicine and improved health outcomes.
