A native of North Carolina and graduate of Duke medical school, Dr. Newman has been a practicing surgeon and chief of surgery at Children’s National for over thirty years and is a professor of surgery and pediatrics at George Washington University Medical School. He helped create the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, dedicated to making children’s surgery less invasive and pain free, and is a strong advocate for the expansion of mental health treatment for kids. He and his wife Alison (a neonatal nurse practitioner) are the parents of two sons and live in Bethesda, Maryland.

Peter Schmidt, Ph.D., is Senior Vice President, Chief Research & Clinical Officer, at the Parkinson’s Foundation and oversees research, education and outreach initiatives. Dr. Schmidt leads the foundation’s Parkinson’s Outcomes Project, the largest clinical study ever conducted in Parkinson’s disease and is active in research in diverse clinical areas in Parkinson’s. He serves as an advisor to several government, industry and foundation initiatives, with the focus to set clinical standards. He is involved in several national-scale quality initiatives, including with the U.S. National Quality Forum and the Fresco Network in Italy. He serves on advisory committees for projects in wearable sensors, Huntington’s disease, Glut1 deficiency syndrome, cystic fibrosis, inpatient rehabilitation and telemedicine. His work has been covered widely in the press.

PBC Patient Awaiting a Live Liver Donor – LiveHer [transcript] [audio]

Guest Bio: Bel Kambach, 50 (St. Cloud, MN/Dominican Republic) – Bel, who has stage 4 PBC and awaits a live liver donor to save her life, works as a college professor of geography during the school year and is a speaker on a luxury cruise line during the summer. She speaks 6 languages and has visited 103 countries. She was initially misdiagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis and tried 27 different medications before finally being diagnosed with PBC at the Mayo Clinic three years later in 2012. A single mom, Bel’s story is a remarkable one, including her multi-year fight for a diagnosis, her eventual liver failure, and her ongoing and dramatic search for a live liver donor.  Incredibly, she’s done all of this while attending to her students, and navigating the ups and downs of being a single parent.  Bel is also an ambassador for the LiveHer National Photography Project. She has lectured widely both nationally and internationally and has published in 83 peer reviewed journals including Gastroenterology, The Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, and the American Journal of Gastroenterology. She also currently sits on the editorial boards of several leading journals, including Gastroenterology, American Journal of Gastroenterology, and Nature Clinical Practice Gastroenterology & Hepatology.

Guest Bio: Jim Kelly was diagnosed with cancer in his upper jaw in 2013. He underwent surgery, but after a follow-up test, Kelly found out the cancer had returned and he would need to begin treatment for his cancer. It was a long and challenging road, but in August 2014, doctors gave Kelly the good news that they could no longer find evidence of any cancer. Jim Kelly began his professional football career in 1986, following two years with the United States Football League’s Houston Gamblers. During his 11 years with the Buffalo Bills, he led the team to six AFC East Championships and four consecutive championship appearances. Kelly holds the all-time football record for most yards gained per completion in a single game, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002. He became known for his motto: “You have to be Kelly tough.” This motto, which built on the importance of being physically and mentally strong and able to bounce back from injuries, took on a new – and more important – meaning after his cancer diagnosis.
