Guest Bio: Ajay Goel, PhD., is Director of Translational Genomics and Oncology, and the Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Research at the Baylor Scott & White Research Institute, Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX. He is currently researching the prevention of gastrointestinal cancers using integrative and alternative approaches, including botanical products. Two of the primary botanicals he is investigating are curcumin (from turmeric) and boswellia.  Dr. Goel is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Gastroenterology Association and is on the international editorial boards of World Journal of Gastroenterology and World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology.

Guest Bio: Brent Barnes is the CEO and Managing Director of LBT Innovations.  He is also a non-executive Director of Connek Pty Ltd, a Telecommunications and IT professional services company that subcontracts to major blue chip companies within the IT/T space. Brent spent 11 years gaining broad Senior Executive experience in a variety of roles with Australian medical device manufacturer Cochlear Limited. Brent relocated to the United States working for Cochlear Americas, where he held senior Operations and Sales roles based in Colorado and Texas.  During this time, he established a US Manufacturing subsidiary, where product was manufactured and business audited by the FDA with no observations.  Mr Barnes returned to Sydney in 2011 to take up roles including Director, Recipient Services & Operations (Asia-Pacific) and General Manager, Asia Growth Markets and Operations Director (Asia Pacific), which saw him spending 50% of his time in Asia. Brent also enjoys all sports and tries to keep fit.  He’s a keen Aussie Rules follower, and a Life Member of Sydney’s North Shore Bombers AFC. He played Australian Rules football for the Denver Bulldogs during his time in the US.

Guest Bio: Dr. Mahmood Kazemi MD, FACE (Fellow of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists) is the Senior Director of Global Medical & Scientific Affairs of Abbott’s diabetes care unit. Prior to this role, Dr. Kazemi was the Medical Director at Sanofi. Dr. Kazemi was also previously in the private Endocrinology practice, while also being the Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California’s San Francisco Division of Diabetes.

Dr. Kazemi earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Stanford University, and his medical degree from University of California San Francisco.

Segment overview: In today’s Health Supplier Segment, we are joined by Senior Director, Global Medical and Scientific Affairs Abbott, Diabetes Care Dr. Mahmood Kazemi here to discuss diabetes care and management as well as the FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System. This is a glucose monitoring device indicated for detecting trends and tracking patterns in persons aged 18 and older with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Currently, the Australian Government’s Department of Health is conducting an evaluation of the FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring (FGM) product to consider its suitability for subsidisation under the National Diabetes Services Scheme. The Assessment panel will take into account FGM’s clinical effectiveness, safety and cost effectiveness.

Guest Bio: Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who have experienced difficulties in life as a result of the way we used to eat. We joined FA because we were obsessed with food. We find that we need this program of recovery and the fellowship of others who share our problems in order to stop abusing food and begin living fulfilling lives. Through shared experience and mutual support, we help each other to recover from the disease of food addiction.  Our program of recovery is based on the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. We make use of AA principles to gain freedom from addictive eating. There are no dues, fees, or weigh-ins at FA meetings. Membership is open to anyone who wants help with food.

Guest Bio: Andrea P. Thau, O.D., was first elected to the American Optometric Association Board of Trustees in 2007, and installed as Immediate Past President at the 120th Annual AOA Congress & 47th Annual AOSA Conference: Optometry’s Meeting® in June 2017.  In addition to her responsibilities as Immediate Past President, Dr. Thau serves as chair of the AOA Personnel Committee and is a member of the Executive and Agenda Committees.  Prior to her election to the Board, Dr. Thau served as the first woman president of the New York State Optometric Association, the New York Academy of Optometry and the Optometric Society of the City of New York.  She is a founding member of the AOA’s InfantSEE® committee which developed the InfantSEE® program and was a member of multiple AOA committees, including the AOA Pediatrics and Binocular Vision Committee, the Infants’ Vision Project Team, and the Faculty Relations Committee. Dr. Thau is the owner of a four doctor group private practice on Park Avenue in Manhattan. The practice is a full-scope primary care practice with special emphasis on children’s vision and vision therapy.

Ruby Mosqueda and her mother, Maria Garcia

At the age of eight Ruby Mosqueda was experiencing excruciating headaches that perplexed her physicians.  When her mother, Maria Garcia, took Ruby to an optometrist for her regular comprehensive eye exam, they discovered the cause of her pain. The optometrist found a tumor the size of a golf ball that was pressing on a nerve in Ruby’s brain. The non-cancerous tumor was removed and Ruby has recovered.
