Guest Bio: Dr. Ted Johnson, Ph.D., began working at Pfizer more than 15 years ago. It was his first job out of school. His main work revolves around designing medicines for oncology patients and has focused on lung cancer for non-smokers. Ted has been working on a drug that is able to help lung cancer patients by also treating brain tumors.

Matt Hiznay is a five-year survivor of metastatic lung cancer and a Ph.D. candidate studying cancer molecular genetics. Matt was a second-year medical student in 2011 when he was initially diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer, despite never having smoked in his life. His cancer developed rapidly, causing Matt to experience the complications a lung cancer patient normally experiences over several years within five days.

Guest Bio: Paul Roscoe’s career in healthcare information technology spans over twenty years, during which Roscoe has successfully built companies in Europe and the United States. Before co-founding Docent Health, he joined VisionWare from The Advisory Board Company where he served as the Chief Executive Officer of Crimson, steering the business to become the leading healthcare analytics company in the US market. During his tenure at Crimson, the company experienced unprecedented growth in sales bookings, revenues and customer adoption. Prior to his time with Crimson, Roscoe was General Manager of Microsoft’s Healthcare Solutions Group with specific responsibility for worldwide sales of the Amalga product line. He joined Microsoft with the acquisition of Sentillion, where he served as President, leading that business to become the industry leader in identity and access management technology. Earlier in his career, Roscoe held executive positions at Sybase, New Era of Networks (NEON) and Microscript Corporation.

Vestevich studied nursing and was employed for 7 years in the medical field prior to pursuing her dream of creating and operating her own salon.

Guest Bio: Prof Falasca graduated in Pharmacy and then in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Camerino, Italy. His education further includes a “Diploma of Specialization” in Applied Pharmacology at the University of Bari and a FORMEZ Research Award (PhD equivalent) at the Consorzio Mario Negri Sud, Italy. After three years at the New York University Medical Center, Department of Pharmacology (Head Prof Joseph Schlessinger), Prof Falasca took up a position as Head of the Unit of Physiopathology of Cell Signalling within the Consorzio Mario Negri Sud in 1998. In 2001 he moved to London where he was appointed as Principal Research Fellow, Senior Lecturer within the Department of Medicine at the University College London. In 2007 he was appointed as Professor of Molecular Pharmacology at the Queen Mary University of London. He is currently Professor of Metabolism at Curtin University, Australia. He has published more than 100 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an editorial board member for several international journals.

Segment overview: In today’s segment, we are joined by Professor Marco Falasca from Curtin University here to talk about what is medicinal cannabis and what the university is investigating in this area. This week, the first commercial shipments of medicinal cannabis products have arrived in Perth from Canada. Professor Falasca will be also be discussing, as a specialist in metabolic science, their research into medicinal cannabis treatment at the Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute.

Guest Bio: Maria Said has been a member of Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia (A&AA) since 1993. Her interest evolved when her second child was diagnosed with a potentially life threatening food allergy, asthma, eczema and allergic rhinitis in the early 1990s.

She has now worked as CEO of the organisation for more than 12 years. Since that time, as an advocate for individuals who live with the risk of anaphylaxis, she has presented on the recognition, management and emergency treatment of anaphylaxis.

She has been a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of New South Wales since 2003 and a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Sydney since 2006. She has presented her work locally and internationally, including at the World Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Meeting in Milan.
