Guest Bio: David P. Frishberg, MD is the Vice Chair and Executive Director of Anatomic Pathology, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Following receipt of his MD degree from George Washington University, Dr. Frishberg completed an internship in General Surgery, followed by a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, both at Letterman Army Medical Center, as well as a fellowship in Dermatopathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.

Shelby Moneer joined the Melanoma Research Foundation team in August of 2010 to oversee the education program. As the Director of Education, Shelby is responsible for all development, implementation, and assessment of the education program. Shelby was also elected as the Co-Chair to the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention for 2017-2020.

Overview:

• Forty-seven patients have been given a lower dose of the oral form of a drug at Toowoomba Hospital since 2009, but Health Minister Cameron Dick said it was because in most cases it made the patients sick. Cancer Council Queensland Chief executive Chris McMillan said she expected patients’ families would be provided with full details over coming days.

• National Disability Insurance Agency says it has failed in meeting standards and expectations and that the National Disability Insurance scheme needs to improve and adapt as quickly as possible. CEO of peak body Disability Advocacy Network Australia Mary Mallett said the NDIA statement was a step in the right direction.

• A review into Ambulance Tasmania services has found demand for ambulances is increasing 14 times greater than the state’s population growth. Steve Pearce from the Australian Paramedics Association said the report was not surprising at all, given the massive shortfall in paramedics.

• Brisbane-based nutritionist Anthony Power said it was important to watch what we eat during the winter months to keep our immune system strong and also to control our weight. “We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to exercise and eat well, but when you look at the numbers food is 80 per cent and exercise is only 20 per cent,” he said.

• Robert Blythe, a veteran who served in Korea and Japan, ended up in the home after his dementia advanced. He died of pneumonia last year. The Oakden home is set to close after the state’s chief psychiatrist uncovered abuse and neglect at the facility dating back 10 years.

• An international comparison, published in the Medical Journal of Australia, revealed several popular Australian soft drinks had glucose levels which were 22 per cent higher than those found in the United States. Professor Kingwell said the latest Australian Health Survey found 39 per cent of all men and 29 per cent of women regularly drank sugar-sweetened beverages, making it the largest source of sugar in the Australian diet.

Segment overview: In today’s Health Supplier Segment, we are joined by the Executive Director of Zelda Therapeutics Dr. Stewart Washer here to talk about the results of their ongoing research into the effects of cannabinoids against various types of human breast cancers. While most successful treatments such as hormone therapy are options for breast cancer patients, triple negative breast cancer is more difficult to treat and usually require a combination of therapies, of which chemotherapy is a major one. The results from the study show that Zelda’s THC-rich medicinal cannabis oil formulation is another major potential treatment for this hard-to-treat cancer. Doctor Washer says that is where doctors are going to be excited as the company take this through – another weapon in the armour against breast cancer.

• The Alchemy Chorus was jointly created by conductor Brian Triglone and the charity Alzheimer’s Australia late last year. Creating the choir to apply art therapy as a treatment was part of Alzheimer’s Australia’s strategic plan. The charity said research had proven that the arts enhanced the lives of people living with dementia and their carers.

• SHine SA’s Rapido program offers 10-minute “rapid tests” for clients who believe they may have contracted  HIV. More than 170 tests have been administered in the pilot program’s first year.

• Researchers at Flinders University in South Australia are trialling new imaging technology to better identify those at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. According to the Heart Foundation, which funded the study, one third of sudden cardiac deaths occur without any warning. The trial is part of a wider international project called CMR Guide, looking at scarring on the heart.
