• Scientists at London’s Francis Crick found out that there is a biological reason for why we overeat when we drink alcohol. Alcohol activates specific brain cells or neurons, which stimulate the urge to eat. These nerve cells make a protein known as AgRP neurons and alcohol is modulating the effect of these neurons in increasing food intake.

• Donald Trump is looking into the possibility of forming a presidential panel to review vaccination safety and science, appointing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to oversee the program. Trump is exploring the possibility of forming a commission on autism, which affects so many families. However, no decisions have been made at this time.

• In India, poor sanitation is blamed for persistent malnutrition and child stunting in India. In most part of India, defecating anywhere is a common sight and changing centuries-old habits like these to improve the country’s worst health problems is definitely not easy.

• Five-week-old Masaly Mosby died of pneumonia in 2011 after being taken to Broome Hospital three times in four days. Coroner Sarah Lynton, who is examining her death, says more could have been done by hospital staff and the infant’s own family to save her life.

• The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has ordered the Port Augusta power station to stop ash dust blowing over the city to prevent further environmental harm. The notice received by the company orders them to execute dust monitoring daily.

• Rural communities don’t have access to medical treatment for weeks at a time as Western Australia’s Mid West region grapples with a nurse shortage. The nearest hospital to Yalgoo is more than 200 kilometres away in Geraldton, while for Cue and Mount Magnet the nearest hospital is in Meekatharra, 120 and almost 200kms respectively.

• Medicinal cannabis advocates are urging Australian authorities to legalise the drug to help ease the pain and suffering of those who desperately need it. The recent raid on Adelaide supplier Jenny Hallam’s property last week sparked an outcry from families who rely on the drug and the lack of supply could cost people their lives.

• The Barnett Government has assured the public it will not rush the opening of the Perth Children’s Hospital and will not accept the building until the lead contamination issue has been safely resolved. After flushing millions of litres of water through the hospital’s water pipes, the contractor has been seeking a temporary solution by including filters to remove lead from the water.

• Doctor Dinesh Palipana, a Queensland medical graduate who was left quadriplegic after a car accident, said he was offered an intern at the Gold Coast University Hospital, making him the first quadriplegic medical intern in Queensland.
