• The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) offered free vaccines to children aged 0-4 and 15-19 after an outbreak of meningococcal disease in the Goldfields reporting five cases over the past two months. Parents have rushed to take advantage of the biggest emergency vaccination campaign in Western Australia’s history with more than 1,500 doses of vaccine administered in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Coolgardie and Kambalda.

• As many as 388,000 Australians will lose access to free dental services next year under changes announced by Health Minister Sussan Ley as a result of decreasing allotted budget by the government. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule will be modified, with the maximum benefits available to eligible children to be reduced from $1,000 to $700 over two years.

• The University of Queensland (UQ) research, which explores how stem cells with a gene mutation behave, may explain what leads to brain overgrowth — a characteristic of Sotos Syndrome and Marshall Smith Syndrome. Lead author Lachlan Harris said the research was a significant contribution to understanding how the brain develops, and could help patients better understand their condition.

• The Royal Hobart Hospital’s (RHH) is likened to third world facilities. The Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has joined a campaign launched by the AMA and the nurses union last month, encouraging disgruntled patients to send postcards calling for more resources to the Health Minister Michael Ferguson.

• Vitamin D supplement taken by pregnant mothers could be the answer to reducing the incidence of autism as suggested by the study led by researchers at the Queensland Brain Institute. Lead author Professor John McGrath said the study found pregnant women with low vitamin D were more likely to have children with autistic traits by the age of six.

• Radiology services at Adelaide’s Lyell McEwin Hospital are being outsourced after the South Australian Government was unable to hire more public sector staff and work piled up. Radiology SA will take over from early next year, doubling the staffing for medical imaging services.

• The South Australian Government needs to show more support for a proposal to grow medicinal cannabis at Holden’s Elizabeth factory once the site is vacated in 2017. The Australian Cannabis Corporation (ACC) wants to use half the existing buildings, which would create 2,500 new jobs and generate $800 million annually.

• Up to 60,000 students in years 10, 11 and 12 will be offered free vaccines for meningococcal B by the University of Adelaide and SA Health in 2017 as part of a “nation-leading” trial. Meningococcal B has been in the spotlight this year with several cases in South Australia, causing serious illness and even death. The vaccine trial is being funded by GlaxoSmithKline, the company which makes the drug.

• Garry Steven Davis, a former employee of Summitcare Nursing Home, has been sentenced to 40 years in jail with a minimum of 30 years until he is eligible for parole after being found guilty of injecting insulin to residents who does not require insulin. As a result, 2 residents died while the other recovered.
