• New devices to rapidly test the hearing of newborn babies will only take 12 seconds, compared to the current tests which take seven minutes. The new units, the size of a mobile phone, are already in use at the Mater Mother’s Hospital, and will be rolled out to all 64 birthing hospitals in the state by January 2018.

• Victoria’s Health Department is investigating whether a patient-sharing deal between The Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre headed by the hospital’s urology chief Anthony Costello is in breach of Medicare billing rules.

• Dr John McGhee, the director of the 3D Visualisation Aesthetics Lab at the University of New South Wales, has created the videogame-like VR experience. Leading medical specialists and Australian scientists are collaborating to trial the VR experience as a tool to educate stroke patients about their condition.

• Researchers at UNSW, The University of Adelaide and Free University of Brussels have developed a new growth factor called Cumulon that allows eggs to be retrieved earlier than in IVF, and matured outside the womb. The findings are being presented at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society for Reproductive Biology on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

• A diagnostic tool that attaches to a mobile phone will replace the role of a GP according to Professor Kirill Alexandrov of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) who developed it. He said the tool could also be used to immediately detect serious disease outbreaks anywhere in the world.

• An article in the medical journal Thorax recorded the case of a 61- year-old man who played the bagpipes daily but had struggled with a dry cough and breathlessness for seven years. The doctors treating him to took samples from inside the pipes and these revealed a host of different fungi growing in the moist bag, neck and mouthpiece area of the instrument, which the man had been inhaling when he played.

• In 2006, the Federal Government fixed the price that health funds pay for common medical devices including replacement hips and knees and defibrillators. Dr Rachel David, the chief executive of Private Healthcare Australia, said prices of the medical devices were set at high levels by world standards.

• Earlier this year, the Therapeutic Goods Administration approved the use of the anti-retroviral drug Truvada as a pre-exposure prophylactic (PrEP) to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted HIV. But the independent Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) recommended Truvada not be added to the PBS as a preventative drug, citing concerns it would not be cost-effective.

• A Brisbane hospital security guard who allegedly tackled an elderly patient to the ground (injuries inflicted during the incident that subsequently saw Mr van der Veen die two weeks later) has been granted bail after being charged with manslaughter on the condition that he report to police once a week and not travel internationally.

• South Australia remains the only state where the secondary supply of liquor to minors is allowed — that is, parents consenting to supply alcohol for their children at private parties — but former justice Tim Anderson wants that to change, recommending a legislation to prevent adults supplying liquor to minors, including at residential premises.

• With less than two months to the election, the Canberra Liberals have set their sights on the ACT health system. The $10 million in funding will go towards hiring 52 new nurses, while an additional $750,000 will go towards increasing security at both Canberra and Calvary hospitals.

• University of South Australia professor Andrew Beer said social isolation was a growing problem for older Australians, with about one in five reporting feeling socially isolated or lonely in some way. Professor Beer said groups like senior citizens clubs helped reduce the risk for older people in the community and to have such groups disappear would be a huge loss.
