• Australian scientists are confident a goo-like substance that was instrumental in the creation of life on Earth also holds significant medical benefits. The molecules of the primordial goo, known as prebiotic compounds, date back billions of years.

• Albany Health Campus is expected to resume elective surgeries, after a fire closed down a section of the hospital on Friday. A temporary operating theatre was set up to deal with emergency cases.

• A $1.2m loss for the Riverina Medical and Dental Aboriginal Corporation (RivMed) in Wagga Wagga has been described as a one off. Last year a $30, 000 loss was reported, but an auditor said the true financial situation was unclear due to a lack of record keeping.

• Health Minister Sussan Ley has released an issues paper on private health insurance reform. Health insurers could be asked to provide better value for money for rural and regional customers.

• Residents in Western Australia’s Goldfields are being warned to get vaccinated after a recent increase in mumps cases. Since March there has been 300 cases of mumps. The WA Country Health Service said the Goldfields cases were linked to outbreaks elsewhere in the state, which began in the Kimberley in March.

• Dr John Greenwood cares for 450 acute burns patients each year, has developed a biodegradable skin graft substitution, and has now been honoured as South Australia’s 2016 Australian of the Year. Dr Greenwood practises as a plastic surgeon and medical director at the Adult Burns Centre at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

• Northeast Health Wangaratta will increase its efforts to attract state and federal funding to meet increasing demand for its services. Northeast Health CEO Margaret Bennett said the service had an annual operating turnover last financial year of almost $114 million, leading to a budget deficit of $347,000.

• University of Canberra research has suggested Australia’s rates of childhood obesity could be turned around with just small changes to lifestyle. The study indicated steps such as cutting out one small chocolate bar and doing 15 minutes of exercise a day could more than halve the rates of overweight or obese children.
