• The head of Bendigo Community Health Services is encouraging the sector to tackle preventable chronic diseases using a similar tactics to anti-smoking campaigns.

• South Australia is trailing the national average for emergency department (ED) waiting times, new hospital figures have revealed. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has found 66 per cent of the state’s emergency patients are seen on time, compared with 74 per cent nationally.

• Indonesia’s health ministry has apologised after a printing error led to posters being put up claiming that HIV can be transmitted through mosquito bites, swimming and sneezing, as well as human saliva and sweat.

Dr Walker commenced stress echocardiography in 1992 and has since performed 15,000 studies, over 30,000 trans thoracic echoes and 2,000 trans oesophageal echoes. Stress echocardiography provides much more information to the practitioner than stress testing alone. Dr Walker has published seven books (all of which have been best sellers) on preventative cardiology and lectures both nationally and internationally on this subject. Dr Walker’s other area of expertise is in the field of preventative cardiology and he has also commenced a related service in arterial screening.

Overview:
• Horse owners concerned about the Hendra vaccine have struggled to gain support for their cause, but now they have a Queensland Government politician Jim Pearce, who took up the cause three weeks ago and, had more than 5000 messages of support. And he has come out swinging, much to the frustration of veterinarians.

• The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) reviewed the safety of anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, as well as newer anti-inflammatory drugs known as Cox-2 inhibitors. After considering submissions from health experts and the drug manufacturers, labels will be updated to say: “Do not use for more than a few days at a time unless a doctor has told you to. Excessive use of the drugs can be harmful and increase the risk of heart attack, stroke or liver damage.”

• Western Australia’s health system will face significant job cuts over the next eight months as the Health Department tries to reduce costs in line with national funding levels. WA hospitals are funded using national and state formulas to match their so-called “activity level”, or the work they undertake treating patients.

• Terry Slevin, director of education and research at the Cancer Council of Western Australia, told 720 ABC Perth there were at least 26 smartphone apps on the market.  He said they might be a useful prompt to remind people to check their skin and go to the doctor or to keep photographic records of moles they were worried about — but that is all.

• Recent figures from Alzheimer’s Australia suggest around 25,100 Australians aged between 30 and 64 live with the degenerative illness.Graham Gilmore was 58 when he started showing signs of Younger Onset Dementia (YOD). He was having regular memory lapses and was having trouble with some aspects of his work.

• The World Health Organisation has warned the overuse of antibiotics is fuelling dangerously high resistance levels and called on individual countries to tackle misconceptions about the drugs.

• Australian scientists are confident a goo-like substance that was instrumental in the creation of life on Earth also holds significant medical benefits. The molecules of the primordial goo, known as prebiotic compounds, date back billions of years.

• Albany Health Campus is expected to resume elective surgeries, after a fire closed down a section of the hospital on Friday. A temporary operating theatre was set up to deal with emergency cases.

• A $1.2m loss for the Riverina Medical and Dental Aboriginal Corporation (RivMed) in Wagga Wagga has been described as a one off. Last year a $30, 000 loss was reported, but an auditor said the true financial situation was unclear due to a lack of record keeping.

• Health Minister Sussan Ley has released an issues paper on private health insurance reform. Health insurers could be asked to provide better value for money for rural and regional customers.

• Residents in Western Australia’s Goldfields are being warned to get vaccinated after a recent increase in mumps cases. Since March there has been 300 cases of mumps. The WA Country Health Service said the Goldfields cases were linked to outbreaks elsewhere in the state, which began in the Kimberley in March.

• A new study has identified the workplace as a major cause of psychological and physical ill-health. From long hours to economic insecurity, our jobs could literally be killing us. So what practices lead to a healthy workplace?
