The Health News – 15 July 2016

Overview:
• This is the first time scientists have linked infected implants to the cancer, known as Anaplastic Large-Cell Lymphoma (ALCL).  Associate professor Anand Deva from Macquarie University’s Health Sciences Centre led the research. They found that the women had developed the cancer within eight years of surgery.

• An independent review found systemic failures and widespread complacency led to the re- emergence of the disease, thought to have been eradicated 30 years ago. Workers’ X-rays will also be sent overseas to be re-checked, while local radiographers will be up-skilled. But Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists president Dr Greg Slater said that was not necessary.

• Suicide prevention researcher Gerry Georgatos created the Change.org petition addressed to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, for a royal commission into levels of suicide among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention Evaluation Project (ATSISPEP), which Mr Georgatos is a member of, has also previously backed a royal commission into the issue.

Overview:
• Professor Hannah Dahlen and Dr Kate Levette, an Adjunct Fellow at Western Sydney University’s National Institute of Complementary Medicine, have been conducting a small study to look at the effectiveness of antenatal education. The study was prompted by the Towards Normal Birth Policy directive, released in 2010 by the NSW Government, after it raised concerns about the high level of medical interventions during labour.

• US Vice-President Joe Biden will travel to Melbourne this weekend, where he will the visit the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre to promote US-Australia cancer research cooperation. 

• The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report show that between 2008 and 2012, 7.5 people per 100,000 died from melanoma in Queensland — the highest rate in the country. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said almost 13,300 new cases of melanoma were likely to be diagnosed in Australia this year — with 3,600 of them from Queensland.

Overview:
•  Pre-clinical trials have shown the drug sodium selenate slows the progression of changes in the brain that cause epilepsy. Professor Terry O’Brien, a neurologist from the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the study’s lead author, said head injuries were one of the most common causes of long-term disability in young people.

• People needing an ambulance for non-urgent cases have been warned to expect delays as about 350 paramedics stop work to address an industry in crisis. Ambulance Employees Association (AEA) of SA secretary Phil Palmer said crude cost-cutting was leading to chronic staff shortages, ramping, and an unmanageable workload within the ambulance service.

• The first study of its kind in Australia observed the outcomes of 574,000 South Australian babies over a 30-year period and confirmed there were differences based on a baby’s sex. Professor Claire Roberts from the University’s Robinson Research Institute found the evidence was there and very clear that boys are more likely to be born spontaneous pre-term.

• The number of Australians being diagnosed with AIDS each year is now so small, researchers from the Kirby and Peter Doherty institutes and the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations have announced the age of the fatal syndrome over.

• Burkholderia pseudomallei is found in soil in northern Australia, particularly in stagnant water in the wet season. Queensland
researchers have found that it kills tens of thousands of people each year can be spread through the sniff of a nose and travel
to the brain and spinal cord in 24 hours.

• A team from the Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics (KCCG; Garvan Institute of Medical Research) was a top performer in last  week’s precisionFDA ‘Truth Challenge’, an online competition designed to test the performance of genome informatics pipelines worldwide.
