Overview:
• Three new cases of measles over the past four days in Victoria are believed to be linked, with health officials warning of an increase in the risk of a significant outbreak. The new cases raised concerns that there were now multiple undetected cases in the community potentially spreading the infection, Victoria’s acting chief health officer Finn Romanes said.

• The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is now formally being rolled out nationwide. Providers believe under the arrangements they will have to fight to attract and keep business, and marketing and advertising expenses will rise. In some states including Tasmania, the rollout will be staged, with Tasmanians aged between 12 and 14 eligible for the NDIS for the first time.

• Of 500 respondents across the ACT public sector, 40 per cent said their workload had increased significantly over the past 18 months, and 31 per cent said the increase was dramatic enough to impact their health. CPSU regional secretary Vince McDevitt said the Government had been running down the local public service in a bid to save money.

• More than half of female university students in Australia are skipping meals before a big night out so they can save calories for alcohol, an Adelaide study has found conducted by PhD student and researcher Alissa Knight at the University of South Australia that looks into the social phenomena dubbed drunkorexia. Ms Knight said drunkorexia was the combination of two social cultures in Australia involving binge drinking and a desire to be thin.

•  A safe and effective vaccine against the Zika virus is an important step closer, with the results of a major study published in the journal Nature. The researchers said, based on their findings, a Zika vaccine for humans will likely be readily achievable. 

• Mandatory fortification of bread with folic acid and iodine was introduced in 2009 to address the prevalence of neural tube defects and to deal with the re-emergence of iodine deficiencies. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare said neural tube defects had fallen more than 74 per cent in Indigenous babies since the move.

• Drug law reformers Matt Noffs and Dr Alex Wodak are pushing ahead with Australia’s first supervised ice smoking room, in a move which directly contradicts the NSW Government’s stance on such a centre.

• Young Australians are drinking about 50 per cent less alcohol than people the same age 10 years ago, new research shows. The study was led by Dr Michael Livingston from the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research at Melbourne's La Trobe University. Illicit drug use is down, too, which shows young people are not simply switching from one vice to another.

• It is hoped the Queensland Specialist Immunisation Service, based at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, will boost immunisation rates across the state to target children who are not vaccinated because of complex medical conditions.
