Diabetes Now Classified Into Five Clusters
Diabetes is a chronic condition in which blood sugar, levels are too high. The two types of diabetes are referred to as type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the body cannot produce insulin while with type 2 diabetes, the body does not use insulin properly. Based on study, Diabetes has five clusters as it appears that type 2 diabetes has 4 specific subtypes.
With the new discoveries on these subtypes, treatment would me more effective since these classifications could help create more individualized care for diabetes patients. The researchers say, “This new sub stratification could change the way we think about type 2 diabetes and help to tailor and target early treatment to patients who would benefit most, thereby representing a first step towards precision medicine in diabetes,”.
Senior study author Dr. Leif Groop, Director of Lund University Diabetes Center in Sweden said: “Today, we intensify treatment after things have happened. With this new classification, it makes it possible to do it before things happen.”
Dr Sladek told Medscape Medical News he was not surprised with these findings. Undeniably, criticisms of this study emerged from doctors from all over the world. Diabetes experts have their concerns and doubts.
