Overview:
• A two-time cancer-surviving grandmother Yvonne D’Arcy, 69 years old from Brisbane has won her “David and Goliath” battle against Myriad Genetics that wanted to patent the BRCA-1 cancer gene. The court found that while the discovery of the gene was a product of human action, to consider it an invention would stretch the law too far. The ruling is in line with the US Supreme Court ruling that genes are not inventions, but discoveries.

• Daniel Lloyd, a South Australian man turned around his unhealthy lifestyle and a lack of exercise to shape up for a crack at the New York marathon. Mr Lloyd is among 10 Indigenous participants from across Australia who were chosen for what is known as the Indigenous marathon project. The project was launched four years ago by Australian marathon legend, Rob de Castella, to promote healthy living.

• Dr David Bramley, from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, are warning patients are at risk of serious harm because labels on strong surgical drugs are too easy to mix up. He has written to health authorities urging them to introduce clearer labels. He has outlined 12 cases of the wrong surgical drugs being used in Victorian hospitals in 2011, with more than 90 per cent of errors due to look-alike packaging.

He is a leading international researcher into the neurocognitive effects of natural products, supplements and food components, having published over 170 peer-reviewed journal articles, and 15 books and book chapters. He has attracted over $17 million in research funding, including from industry which allows rapid translation of research into evidence-based end-user health benefits. Scholey has been lead investigator in a series of studies into the human biobehavioural effects of natural products, and their neurocognition-enhancing and anti-stress/anxiolytic properties. His current research focuses on neuroimaging and biomarker techniques to better understand the mechanisms of cognitive enhancement.

Segment overview: In today’s Health Supplier Segment, we are joined by Professor Andrew Scholey. He has been invited as one of the speakers in this year’s Blackmores Institute Symposium 2015 and he will be speaking about the research ‘World First Study: Curcumin For Brain Ageing.’ Published in the Journal of Journal of Psychopharmacology, the study is the first to examine the effects of curcumin on cognition and mood in a healthy older people or to examine any acute behavioural effects in humans. The study found significant benefits to attention, working memory in the hour or so after a single dose. After four weeks the working memory effect was still there and a number of other positive effects emerged. These included significantly reduced fatigue. Professor Scholey will be discussing this topic during the symposium and how this research can best be turned into real health benefits for patients in Australia

Overview:
• Research commissioned by Mental Health Australia examined what activities Australians undertook to improve their mental health and wellbeing against 10 key activities. They examined things such as sleep, exercise, diet, involvement in the community and seeking advice or support. Studies shows that only 18 per cent of Australians regularly seek support when stressed or feeling down.

• Audiologists are warning against the privatisation of Australian Hearing, saying people suffering hearing loss will end up paying the price in an industry already rife with predatory pricing and kick-backs. Dr Vass is a doctor of audiology and he is worried no formal qualifications are needed in the industry.

• India is the in grip of its worst dengue fever outbreak in years, with more than 6,500 confirmed cases and at least 25 deaths in the capital New Delhi so far this season. Thousands of cases have overloaded the city’s hospitals. At New Delhi’s Hindu Rao Hospital, some patients share beds. Hospital reports put Delhi’s death toll between 30 and 40, while authorities have verified 25 fatalities. That prompted officials to order 1,000 extra beds.

Overview:
• There has been a significant jump in the number of codeine-related deaths in Australia, new research has revealed. A study, published in the Medical Journal of Australia, found fatalities involving the pain medicine more than doubled between 2000 and 2009. Australian Medical Association vice president Dr Stephen Parnis said many of the deaths were caused when patients were on several strong pain medications.
