The Importance of Diversity and Inclusion in Healthcare

Juan Mejia, who serves as the President of NewYork-Presbyterian’s Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and as the executive lead of the system’s LGBTQ+ task force, discusses the impact of change a C-suite leader has within both the hospital and the surrounding communities, how senior leaders roles have changed with technological evolution and digitalization, and how New York-Presbyterian has cultivated a community that celebrates diversity and understanding for patients, their families, and for NYP’s workforce.

Juan Mejia, M.P.H., is President of NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. In this role, he is responsible for the strategic direction and management of the Hospital operations, including overseeing physician relationships and clinical strategy implementation of the hospital campus. Since joining NewYork-Presbyterian in 2003, he has held a number of management roles of increasing responsibility with focus on hospital operations, emergency management, efficiency and patient quality and safety. These leadership roles across NYP include being the Director of Clinical Operations at NYP/ Columbia, Vice President of Operations at NYP Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, Vice President of Operations at NYP Weill Cornell, and most recently, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at NYP Lower Manhattan Hospital. Juan was a member of Community Board 12 in Manhattan for numerous years where he worked alongside board members to advocate for the welfare and needs of the Washington Heights and Inwood communities in uptown Manhattan. He is currently on the Board of Public Prep Academy, dedicated to providing equal education opportunities for children/ adolescents in the Bronx community. Mr. Mejia earned his Master of Public Health from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and his Bachelor’s in Physiological Science from the University of California in Los Angeles.
